We spoke to Marlucy after she won the award.
How did you feel when you found out you had won the competition?
I was very happy and excited when I got the news. I’ve been nominated in the past but I was not expecting to win this award. I wish to thank my customers who kindly nominated me as well as TidyChoice.
You got huge support from your customers who are clearly very happy with you. What is your secret?
When you like what you do, you give it your best and by doing so your customers are always happy with your work. The secret is loving your job. If you do this job just for the money then you are just doing a job and not something that makes you happy.
What is your favourite aspect of being a home cleaner?
I also love the friendships that I build by doing my job well and the trust I gain. For example, I am going on holiday for a couple of weeks and I was worried about my customers. However, they all asked me to let them know when I am back so they can reschedule with me.
I love the flexibility that comes with this job. Sometimes I need to reschedule or my customers need to reschedule with me. I am able to accommodate them which is very important for me. I really appreciate my customers.
What advice would you give to other housekeepers?
My advice would be to have a friendly approach, be polite and pay attention to detail. These are things that customers really appreciate.
Be reliable and have good communication because your customers are going to need you at a certain time on a certain day. If you can’t make it you have to let them know.
Take all the feedback, good or bad, as constructive criticism and learn from it. You will become better at what you do.
Do you have any special cleaning tips and tricks that you can share?
Recently I used this trick with one of my customers and she absolutely loved it. She had a really dirty kettle and she didn’t have the product to clean it. So, I took a lemon from her fridge, mixed it with vinegar and water and I put them in the kettle on the stove for a few minutes. Her kettle was sparkling clean after that.
Now she never throws away her lemons, she leaves them for me to use for cleaning. There are no chemicals involved and this trick works really well.
